SchemeServe allows you to configure the types of claims that can be recorded against a scheme. Once a policy is On Cover, users can then record claims directly against the case.
This article covers how to create claim types, configure default excesses, and record a claim.
1. Create your claim types
Before claims can be recorded against a policy, you need to define the available Claim Types for the scheme.
Go to:
Admin → Claim Types → Add New
Select the relevant scheme and enter the name of the claim type you want to create.
Examples might include:
- Event cancellation
- Event postponement
- Golf equipment
- Delay

Click Add New to save the claim type.
You can create as many claim types as required for the scheme.
2. Configure default excesses
Once a claim type has been created, you can configure its default excesses, if applicable.

A standard excess can be assigned to the claim type. If an excess is set here, it can then be referenced when configuring the scheme.
However, you may not need to enter a default excess here.
It is common for excesses to be calculated within the rating file instead. For example, the applicable excess could depend on the answers provided during the quote and then be stored in a hidden question.
Setting excesses through rating and rules
Where excesses vary depending on the risk, the amount can be calculated within the rating file.
For example, the calculation could determine that:
- Net premium of £400–£499 results in a £40 excess.
- Net premium of £500–£599 results in a £50 excess.
- Otherwise, the excess is £0.
Excess values can also be rounded within the rating file where required, such as rounding up to the next £5 or £50.
Where rules are used to set an excess, the rule must be configured at insurer level. Do not configure the excess rule against Any Insurer, as SchemeServe needs to know which insurer's excess should be applied.

3. Recording a claim against a policy
Once a policy is On Cover, you or the broker can record a claim against it.
Open the relevant case and select the Claims tab.

Select Create Claim.
This opens a new claim against the policy. Within the Claim Description section, the Claim Cause dropdown displays the claim types that have been configured for the scheme.

Select the appropriate Claim Cause and complete the remaining claim information as required.
